46. Supposition, condition, concession - leçon
1. SUPPOSITION, CONDITION
IF (si), SUPPOSE, SUPPOSING (à supposer que), PROVIDED THAT (pourvu que), ON CONDITION THAT (à condition que)
If he worked harder, he would get better results => S’il travaillait plus, il obtiendrait de meilleurs résultats.
I will go swimming, provided (that) the weather is fine => J’irai nager pourvu qu’il fasse beau.
Supposing he wants to go, would you like to accompany him? => A supposer qu’il veuille venir, souhaiterais-tu l’accompagner?
L’INVERSION (exprime une supposition dans un style soigné)
Had I been there (= If I had been there), I would have helped you => Si j’avais été là, je t’aurais aidé
Should you meet him (= If you should meet him), don’t speak to him => Si par hasard vous le rencontriez, ne lui parlez pas
UNLESS (introduit une condition négative)
He won’t help you unless you ask him => Il ne t’aidera que si tu lui demandes
I won’t come unless you come => Je ne viendrais que si tu viens.
I’ll finish the dish unless you want some => Je vais finir le plat, à moins que tu en veuilles
WHETHER… OR NOT (introduit deux suppositions contrastées)
You have to come, whether you like it or not => Il faut que tu viennes, que tu le veuilles ou non.
Whether you phone him or not, you’ll have to apologize => Que tu l’appelles ou non, il faudra (bien) que tu présentes tes excuses.
2. CONCESSION, RESTRICTION, OPPOSITION
THOUGH/ALTHOUGH (Bien que)
Though he is only 14, he is as tall as his father => Bien qu’il n’ait que 14 ans, il est aussi grand que son père
Although he cannot speak, we understand him very well => Bien qu’il ne parle pas, nous le comprenons très bien.
THOUGH en fin de phrase
I don’t want to work; I have to, though (=and yet I must) => Je n’ai pas envie de travailler, pourtant il le faut/ pourant je suis obligé.
EVEN THOUGH (bien que, même si, quand bien même)
Even though (=even if) I want to participate, I just can’t => Même si j’ai envie de participer, je ne peux tout simplement pas.
HOWEVER, STILL, YET (cependant, pourtant), ALL THE SAME (quand même), NEVERTHELESS, NONETHELESS (néanmoins)
I don’t like this film. However, I agree the end is interesting => Je n’aime pas ce film. Cependant, j’avoue que la fin est intéressante.
I’m happy we went for a walk; still, (=and yet,) I regret leaving Anabel on her own => Je suis content qu’on soit allé se balader, toutefois je regrette d’avoir laissé Anabel toute seule.
It is strange, yet true (=but it is true) => C’est étrange, et pourtant vrai (mais vrai)
You can ask him not to, he will do it all the same => Tu peux lui demander de ne pas le faire, il le fera quand même
IN SPITE OF + NOM/GN, DESPITE + NOM/GN (malgré)
They walked in spite of the rain =>Ils marchèrent malgré la pluie
They walked despite the rain => Ils marchèrent malgré la pluie
IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT/ DESPITE THE FACT THAT (malgré le fait que)
I like him despite the fact that (=even though) he is sometimes a little strange => Je l’aime bien malgré le fait qu’il soit un peu étrange
I like him in spite of the fact that he is sometimes a little strange => Je l’aime bien malgré le fait qu’il soit un peu étrange
WHATEVER +S+ V/NO MATTER WHAT +S+ V
Whatever you do, he will always complain => Quoi que vous fassiez, il se plaindra toujours
No matter what you do, he will always complain => Quoi que vous fassiez, il se plaindra toujours
HOWEVER + ADJ + S+ V /NO MATTER HOW + ADJ + S+ V
However strong he is, we are not afraid of him => Si fort qu’il soit, nous n’avons pas peur de lui
No matter how strong he is, we are not afraid of him => Si fort qu’il soit, nous n’avons pas peur de lui
Equivalence: ADJ+AS+S+V
Strong as he is, we are not afraid of him = However strong he is, we are not afraid of him= No matter how strong he is, we are not afraid of him => Si fort qu’il soit, nous n’avons pas peur de lui
Autres exemples:
Selfish as he may seem, he is sometimes very generous => Si radin qu’il puisse paraître, il est parfois très généreux
Patient as she is, I’m sure she will succeed => Patiente qu’elle est, je suis certaine qu’elle réussira.
=> donc trois structures possibles pour exprimer la même idée
TOURNURES SOIGNEES
Try as I would, I could not understand => J’avais beau essayer, je ne pouvais pas comprendre
Do what I might, I failed to convince him => J’eus beau faire, je n’ai pas réussi pas à le convaincre.
