47. Moyen, but, cause, conséquence

1.      MOYEN

 BY +V-ING (gérondif)

 He earned his living by giving guitar lesson =>Il gagnait sa vie en donnant des cours de guitare

Moyen de transport: He went to work by bus

 

2.      BUT

 TO +V (infinitif complet)

 She went to Lyon 2 to study psychology => Elle est allée à Lyon 2 pour étudier la psychologie.

 

VARIANTE DE WHY => WHAT FOR?

 What did she go to Cambridge for? => Pour quoi/ pour quelles raisons est-elle allée à Cambridge?

 

SO AS TO + V / IN ORDER TO + V

 We will leave early so as to get there before 8 => Nous partirons tôt afin d’arriver avant 8 heures.

We will leave early in order to get there before 8 => Nous partirons tôt afin d’arriver avant 8 heures.

 

Négation: SO AS NOT TO + V / IN ORDER NOT TO + V.

Variante: to avoid+ V-ing

 We will leave early so as not to be late => Nous partirons en tôt afin de ne pas être en retard.

We will leave early to avoid being late => Nous partirons en tôt afin d’éviter d’être en retard.

 

3.      CAUSE, MOTIF

 BECAUSE (parce que), SINCE (puisque, vu que), AS (comme)

 I didn’t call you because the meeting ended late yesterday => Je ne t’ai pas appelé parce que la reunion a fini tard hier.

Since you are feeling sick, would you rather we stayed at home tonight? => Vu que tu te sens malade, préfèrerais-tu qu’on reste à la maison ce soir?

As we were late, we decided not to wait for him => Comme nous étions en retard, nous avons décidé de ne pas l’attendre.

 

BECAUSE OF, ON ACCOUNT OF, OWING TO ( Si la clause est exprimée sous forme d’un nom ou d’un gérondif)

Because of the fog, the plane couldn’t take off => A cause du brouillard, l’avion n’a pas pu décoller.

On account of his sickness, they had to fly him back home => Dû à/à cause de sa maladie, ils ont dû le rapatrier chez lui.

 

FOR + V-ING après certains verbes/expressions

 I thanked him for coming => Je l’ai remercié d’être venu

He blames her for losing the game => Il l’accuse d’avoir perdu le match

They were punished for being so noisy => Ils ont été punis pour avoir été si bruyants.

I forgave him for arriving so late => Je l’ai pardonné d’être arrivé si en retard

We apologized for being late => On s’est excusé d’être en retard

I felt guilty for having lied to him => Je me sentais coupable de lui avoir menti

 

4. CONSEQUENCE

SO + ADJ + THAT

He was so worried that he came back home => Il était si inquiet qu’il est rentré à la maison

 

SUCH (A) + N + THAT

She was in such a hurry that she forgot her coat => Elle était si pressée qu’elle a oublié son manteau

It is such an expensive car that hardly anybody can afford it => Cette voiture coûte si chère que presque personne n’a les moyens de l’acheter.
